Thank you for your interest in UChicago Sailing! We are recruiting now for Fall 2025.If sailing has ever been something you had your eye on, whether you are a seasoned sailor or its your first time, we want you on our team!
We offer a two trial practice policy, where new sailors have the opportunity to attend two practices before being asked to pay club dues, which are charged quarterly (twice a year, for Fall and Spring Quarters). To join, please fill out our interest form.
All skill levels and undergraduate and graduate students are welcome. Our student-coaches will work to get you up to speed through training on and off the water. To maintain practice continuity, however, we ask all beginners to attend practice regularly throughout the quarter in order to level up their sailing in a consistent manner!

Frequently Asked Questions
I have no experience sailing. Can I still join?
Yes! No prior experience is required to join UChicago Sailing. Please reach out to join our Slack and for the latest practice schedules! To receive a Slack invite, please fill in our interest form.
I am a grad student / postdoc / staff member. Can I still join?
Yes! All members of the UChicago community, regardless of divisional or departmental affiliation, and their spouses, are welcome to join Sailing. In any season, about one third of our sailors are not undergrads, and they are valued members of our team. However, due to national regulations only undergraduates may compete in intercollegiate regattas.
When and where do you practice?
We practice at Jackson Park Yacht Club, located near UChicago’s campus. Please use the Club’s Slack to access the latest practice schedules. A tentative schedule is also available under “Practice Information”.
How much of a time commitment is sailing?
That’s completely up to you! We practice three times a week, and during regatta season we compete most weekends. We ask members to try to attend at least one practice per week, but we of course understand that school comes first.
Does it cost money to sail?
After two “trial” practices, you will be asked to pay $75 to our practice host, the Jackson Park Yacht Club, to join as a student member. We strive to make sailing accessible to all interested members of the UChicago community; if you have concerns about this requirement, please contact us directly.
