Spring 2024 Recruitment

Thank you for your interest in UChicago Sailing! We are recruiting new, experienced sailors for Spring 2024.

If sailing has ever been something you had your eye on, whether you are a seasoned sailor or its your first time, we want you on our team!

All skill levels and undergraduate and graduate students are welcome. We will work to get you up to speed through training on and off the water. To maintain practice continuity, however, we ask all beginners to join at the start of our fall season. We only recruit returning sailors and sailors with past experience for our spring season.

More information about how to join UChicago Sailing, including answers to some frequently asked questions, is below.

Frequently Asked Questions

I have no experience sailing. Can I still join?

Yes, in the fall only. No prior experience is required to join UChicago Sailing for our fall season, but we only recruit experienced sailors in the spring. If you have no prior sailing, please check back in September when we begin fall recruitment.

When and where do you practice?

We practice at Jackson Park Yacht Club, located near UChicago’s campus. For Spring 2024, practices are Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 3:45 to 7:15 pm and on Fridays from 1:00 to 4:30 pm.

How much of a time commitment is sailing?

That’s completely up to you! We practice four times a week, and during regatta season we compete most weekends. We ask members to try to attend at least one practice per week, but we of course understand that school comes first.

I am a grad student / postdoc. Can I still join?

Yes! Graduate students, post docs, faculty, and staff are all welcome to join the Sailing Club. In any season, about one third of our sailors are not undergrads, and they are valued members of our team. However, due to MCSA regulations only undergraduates may compete in intercollegiate regattas.

Does it cost money to sail?

After two “trial” practices, you will be asked to pay $75 to our practice host, the Jackson Park Yacht Club, to join as a student member. We strive to make sailing accessible to all interested members of the UChicago community; if you have concerns about this requirement, please contact us directly. More information about dues and the JPYC is available here.

I have more questions. Who should I contact?

If you’d like to connect with one of our current officers, please complete the form on our Contact page.
